In October 2018, David Castaneda was kayaking in Lake Michigan when something caught his eye through the chilly mist: A dark shape bobbing next to him in the water. He recognized the improbable figure. It was an alligator, about four feet long but strangely limp and unresponsive. Then he saw something even more troubling: Its mouth was bound shut with blue tape.
“It was going to die if I just left it there,” he later told a local news station.
